Tokyo Auto Salon 2025
For the second year in a row I had the privilege of attending the Tokyo Auto Salon. The 2025 exhibition was not only a bigger, bolder experience than 2024’s, it also proved to be a return to form for many Japanese tuning houses. The halls were jam packed with new demo cars, new innovations, and some seriously cool concepts.
I also want to emphasize that it was a family event. Tokyo Auto Salon is not like SEMA, a more guarded, business driven display for industry personnel only. Anyone can freely purchase a ticket and enjoy the spectacle, whether they have a vested interest or even own a car. Children pick up souvenirs, and get to hear their favorite racing drivers speak about challenge and perseverance. And, most importantly, everyone there gets to be inspired for their future project car. It was a very enjoyable time all around.
Let me take the time to call out a few favorites from the show, including RE Amemiya’s latest RX-7 demo, fully clad in carbon fiber. Liberty Walk once again hit it out of the park with their Miura. I am personally a huge fan of Miuras, and while some could criticize this for defacing an icon that is out of production, I applaud their take as showing love in a way that will connect with a new generation of fans. Speaking of older generations, Juha Kankkunen’s Subaru WRX was hauled out of storage, and I wish I could have bought a beer for the kind soul who made that happen. God that car looked just as cool now as it did running rallies in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Last, but certainly not least, was the skunkworks project from Nissan to show what an EV conversion might look like in a R32 GT-R. As with the Miura, did this need to be done? Was it a waste of a perfectly good chassis? I say, bring it on. The dino juice won’t last forever, but beautifully engineered cars should. Well done to the Nissan crew for finding another use for their in-house battery tech.
