Bondi Beach

Visiting a beach with no swimsuit or intention of even dipping one’s toes in the water might seem like a missed opportunity. Yet, when it is a beach as iconic as this one, and when the weather was a chilly 11° C (read: 51° F) during the Austalian Winter in August, the itinerary makes more sense.

The Bondi Icebergs Swimming Pool was the main attraction for me. It’s a feature that is surreal in its existence, a recreational club that should almost be shut down by the coast guard for a safety violation. One errant wave, one big rush of current, and it looks like the swimmers could get swallowed up into the Pacific. Photographically, it’s a gorgeous subject where the sky, sea, and pool all meet together in the frame with those deep aquamarine hues. Well worth the cab fare to stop over from Sydney for a few hours and take in the view.

Update: The tragic news that came out about this wonderful place in December 2025, a few months after my visit, was heartbreaking and unacceptable on all levels of humanity. There is no justification for such violence, and it is a shame that it will be the more prominant memory for most, rather than the natural beauty of this place. Let this serve as a reminder that normal life does go on after such events, and it should not take away from the peace and joy that Bondi Beach brings to residents and visitors alike on a daily basis.
