Simose Art Museum

Blending in while standing out. It’s a philosophy that merges old with new, and in this case industrial with playful. Hiroshima’s coastline is mostly composed of factories and shipping facilities. So, when a new museum project wanted to build there, they took inspiration from the shipping containers, and the water itself, creating a floating gallery unlike any other.

Okay, so floating is a slight exaggeration. The rooms that are positioned over the reflecting pool will not make you feel like you have stepped onto a house boat, but they are reconfigurable depending on how the exhibition is designed. The containers can be clustered together, or spread out as seen here to give a different flow when passing through the galleries.

Inside the main lobby there is a cafe, and an incredible wooden tree-like structure that forms the pillars and interior roof. Outside there were gardens, and a very trick mirrored wall that gives the impression of visitors floating in the clouds. Truly a case of art that has found a way to coexist with its environment, opening the viewer up to more than just what is hung on the walls.
