48 Hours in Kobe

The port of Kobe may be best known for it’s greatest export, Kobe beef, but there is so much more to this city than just happy cows. A metropolis nestled between the sea and the mountains a little ways West of Osaka, it proved to be much more approachable than many of Japan’s other big cities. Even in just a weekend I came away very impressed, and glad to have put it on my list.

Kobe doesn’t boast a centuries old castle, or a particularly famous shrine. The food scene is outstanding, with a little extra bit of soul mixed into that famous steak that the locals take great pride in serving up. There were also many great cafes, each with premium cakes and sweets to accompany your coffee or tea of choice. Head down near the waterfront for some beautiful views of the port tower, along with an interactive aquarium that drew in visitors of all ages.

48 hours was only enough to catch so much though, and I look forward to returning another time for a sake brewery tour or a chance to explore more of the back alleys that add so much character to the city’s charm.
