Koinobori Under Tokyo Tower
Koinobori, or carp streamers, are hung each year at the beginning of May, leading up to Children’s Day, the final holiday on the Monday after Golden Week. They are a symbol of strength and perseverance, able to withstand the wind, but also act as a decoration of the season. Add in the backdrop of the iconic Tokyo Tower, and you’ve got something special.
Tokyo Tower is such a great architectural structure against the city’s modern buildings, so having a traditional, cultural element like these streamers was a nice way to bring it down to Earth. They gave the red and white tower another breath of color against the clear blue sky on this occasion, making it even more photogenic than normal.
Earlier that day, I also sought out another view of Tokyo Tower from the Tokyo EDITION hotel building in Toraemon. Their Lobby Bar restaurant on the 31st floor has windows looking out on the Minato City district, an excellent way to take in the panorama over a cup tea and some sweets.
